Skin Care for Oily Skin: 5 Tips You Need to Know

by | Jun 29, 2022 | Facials

Colorado has some of the lowest humidity levels in the country, which is great news for your skin, right?

Not necessarily. While many of us struggle with skin that’s too dry, others are trying to balance out an oily complexion. Depending on your genetics, where you live, and the time of year, oily skin could be your seasonal (or year-round) nemesis.

It doesn’t have to be that way. All you need are the right tips to keep excess oil at bay!

Keep reading as we share our best tips for skin care for oily skin.

1. Cleanse Twice a Day

One of the simplest (and most effective) ways to tackle excess oil production is to prevent buildup. Wash your face twice a day — once in the morning and once before bedtime — with warm water and gentle soap.

This not only clears away excess oil but also removes dirt and other particles that your skin picks up throughout the day. Pat your face dry with a soft washcloth, avoiding any harsh scrubbing or pulling motions.

2. Scrutinize Product Labels

Your skin care products can either help you in your quest to produce less oil — or make your problem ten times worse.

Look for words like “oil-free” or “noncomedogenic.” These labels mean that the product won’t clog your pores or lead to acne breakouts. A gentle, foaming face wash is usually best for people with oily skin.

If this isn’t effective enough, step things up with a product that contains one or more of the following:

Always choose products that don’t contain fragrances or added moisturizers. These can dry out your skin and (ironically) trigger your sebaceous glands to produce more oil.

3. Try a Toner

Some people with oily skin find success using natural astringents, such as witch hazel. Its high tannin content makes it naturally anti-inflammatory, and it can also make large pores appear smaller.

Like any new skin care product, test it on a small patch of skin first and see how your body reacts.

4. Use Natural Face Masks

Skip those face masks you see in the beauty aisle and go the natural route instead.

Try a mask made of raw organic honey. Smooth it on your face, let it dry for 10 minutes, then gently wipe it off. Honey has natural antiseptic and antibacterial properties, which can help to balance out your skin and keep breakouts at bay.

5. Don’t Forget to Moisturize

You might be tempted to skip the moisturizer if you have oily skin, but this is a rookie mistake! Choose an oil-free moisturizer to keep your skin protected and moist without making it greasy.

If you want an all-natural alternative, try aloe vera. Studies show that it can effectively moisturize oily skin without causing acne or blackheads.
