Got the Sniffles? Here’s When and How to Cancel an Appointment

by | Dec 1, 2022 | Health Tips

You’re psyched when you go to bed, knowing you have your massage appointment booked for the next day. But when you wake up, your nose is stuffy, your head is pounding, and your throat is killing you.

What should you do now?

Is it okay to get a massage or a facial when you have a cold? Will it make you feel better (or worse)? Is it best to reschedule for another day when you’re feeling 100%?

Not surprisingly, there are some of the most frequently asked questions we hear. Let’s answer them one by one and explain why, when, and how to cancel an appointment at the spa.

Does Massage Make a Cold Worse?

In general, massage therapy is great for your immune system.

However, when you’re sick, your body is working hard to fight off the infection. Your lymphatic system, your circulatory system, and each of your organs play a major role in your recovery.

It may seem counterintuitive, but getting a massage actually hinders your body’s ability to heal. The pressure and heat generated during a massage or a facial can impede the movement of waste products through your gut, sinuses, and lymph nodes. So, rather than getting better faster, you’re likely to feel worse longer!

If that’s not enough reason to avoid getting a spa treatment when you’re sick, here are three more:

  • Your body is usually more sensitive to touch when you’re sick, so the treatment could feel painful
  • Lying face-down for an extended period of time will only aggravate sinus congestion
  • You’ll spread germs to your therapist, the receptionist, and others, possibly making them sick too

When Should I Cancel My Spa Appointment?

It’s always disappointing to reschedule a massage or facial treatment, but it’s the wisest course of action if you’re experiencing any of these symptoms:

  • Sneezing
  • Coughing
  • Sore throat
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Sinus congestion
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea

If in doubt, it’s best not to go to the spa. Your therapist or esthetician is always happy to see you — except when you’re sick!

Sharing a small space and breathing the same air for 60-90 minutes almost guarantees they (and the clients they see after you) will also get ill.

How to Cancel an Appointment at the Spa

Every facility has its own rules regarding cancellations, so it’s good to get familiar with the spa policies at your chosen location.

At Apres Massage and Facial, we typically require 24 hours notice to cancel or reschedule your appointment.

However, we also understand that unexpected events — such as illness — can happen quickly, so it’s always best to call and explain your situation. The receptionist will do their best to work with you and find a solution that suits everyone involved.

Rest, Recover, and Return to the Spa

It’s lousy being sick, and it’s even lousier to cancel a spa appointment when you’re sick.

As we’ve discussed, though, it’s the wise and responsible thing to do. Getting bodywork while you’re sick could not only make your symptoms worse, but it’s likely to spread your illness to the spa’s staff and clientele.
