The Best Things to Do in Vail (Besides Skiing)

by | Jan 1, 2021 | Vail

Not a skier or snowboarder? Or maybe you just need a break from the slopes to rest those weary legs.

Either way, there’s no shortage of amazing things to do in Vail during the wintertime. As America’s most-visited ski resort (with over 1.6 million visitors each year), Vail has something special to offer everyone — young and old, on and off the slopes.

In this post, we’ll outline some of the best winter activities in Vail to enjoy during your mountain getaway. Let’s get started!

1. Take a Scenic Snowshoeing Tour

One of the best ways to enjoy a bluebird Colorado day is by strapping on a pair of snowshoes. At this leisurely pace, you can really slow down and take in the beautiful vistas our valley is known for.

The Nature Discovery Center at the top of Vail’s Eagle Bahn Gondola offers free snowshoe tours to people of all ages and experience levels. Just down the road at Beaver Creek, McCoy Park offers snowshoers nearly 20 miles of pristine groomed trails to explore.

2. Race Across the Wilderness via Snowmobile

Do you feel the need for speed? If snowshoeing is too tame for you, get your adrenaline pumping with the fastest mode of winter transportation — a snowmobile.

Various companies throughout the Vail Valley and heading south towards Leadville offer snowmobiling excursions for the entire family. Zip across the frozen landscape at speeds up to 50-60MPH and enjoy panoramic views of the many “Fourteeners” (mountains peaks over 14,000 feet in elevation) in the area.

3. Learn Local History at the Snowsports Museum

Did you know that an elite team of WWII mountain troopers trained in Vail before going off to battle in the Italian Alps? Did you know that Scandinavian miners were the first to bring ski equipment to Colorado back in the 1860s?

You can learn all this and much more at the Colorado Snowsports Museum & Hall of Fame, conveniently located beside the Vail Village Parking Garage. Admission is free (with a suggested donation of $5) for a fascinating trip through Colorado history.

4. Get a Massage at One of the Best Spas in Vail

No vacation in Vail would be complete without a little R&R. After a long day on the mountain or exploring Vail village, nothing will make you feel better than a visit to a local spa.

Step out of the cold and onto a blissfully heated massage table. Feel your tension melt away as your therapist kneads those sore muscles in your shoulders, back, and legs. Choose from an array of customizable massages, from hot stone therapy to CBD salve to magnesium-infused lotion.

After your massage, you’ll be ready to tackle another exciting day of your Vail Valley vacation.
