Are you curious about what it’s like to be a massage therapist? Do you have some questions you’d like to ask us, but you’re too shy to bring them up during your session?
Keep reading as our therapists answer your most common massage FAQs.
1. Do Your Hands Ever Hurt?
Yes, sometimes they do. After all, giving a massage is hard work! One source states that a 160-pound female massage therapist may burn close to 300 calories during a one-hour massage session.
Like any type of physical work, sometimes our hands, forearms, shoulders, and backs feel tired after a long day of giving massages. However, we strive to follow a good routine of self-care to avoid injury and continue giving our clients 100%.
2. What Kind of Training Did You Receive?
To become a massage therapist in the United States, we must complete the minimum required hours of education. This varies between 500-1,000 hours, depending on the state. Many states require therapists to complete continuing education every 1-2 years to keep their licenses active.
Massage therapists must also pass a nationally recognized exam before they can receive a professional license to practice massage. The exam tests our knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathology, business law, ethics, and other topics.
3. Do You Ever Get Clients With Smelly Feet?
Yes, it happens sometimes. However, the majority of our clients are courteous enough to take a shower and arrive fresh and clean for their session.
4. What Are Those Little Knots in My Shoulders?
Contrary to popular belief, those crunchy “knots” around your shoulder blades aren’t actually knots in the muscle fibers. Rather, they’re hypersensitive nodules that make the muscle contract — even if you aren’t actively using it.
And, in case you’re wondering, we can’t make those knots magically go away, especially not in one or two sessions. However, regular massages combined with exercise, stretching, and postural awareness can make a big difference in how you feel.
5. What If I Fall Asleep, Snore, or Fart During My Massage?
Look — it happens. It’s nothing to be embarrassed about. In fact, these are all signs that your body is relaxing, which is the primary goal of getting a massage!
6. Should I Take Off My Underwear?
If we had to guess, we’d estimate that half our clients leave their underwear on and half remove them. It truly makes no difference to us one way or the other, so always undress to your comfort level.
7. How Often Should I Get Massages?
The answer depends on many factors: Your physical condition, your mental and emotional health, and (of course) your circumstances and budget.
Once a week is ideal, although understandably it’s not possible for everyone. Even if you can commit to once a month, you’re sure to notice positive changes in your physical health and stress levels.
8. Is Deep Tissue Massage Better Than Swedish?
The saying “no pain, no gain” doesn’t necessarily apply to massage therapy. There’s no rule (or science, for that matter) that says your massage must be painful for it to benefit you.
There are times when deep tissue massage might be beneficial, but there are other times when your body might respond better to moderate or even gentle pressure. As always, it’s best to listen to your body!
9. What Should I Do If I Feel Uncomfortable During My Massage?
Speak up!
We’re intuitive people, but we’re not mind-readers. Always let us know if you need more or less pressure, if you’re too hot or too cold, or if you need to use the restroom.
10. How Much Should I Tip My Massage Therapist?
Like other service settings, the standard spa gratuity is 20% of the treatment price. Of course, if you received an exceptional massage, feel free to toss your therapist a little bit extra to express your gratitude!
