Massage FAQs: Everything You’re Too Embarrassed to Ask

by | Apr 28, 2025 | Massage | 0 comments

Thinking about getting a massage but feeling a little unsure about yourself or the whole “spa” experience?

You’re not alone! Many people have questions—some they’re too shy to ask—before booking a session. Here’s a list of the most common massage FAQs we hear, along with honest answers to help you feel more confident and relaxed.

1. Do I have to be completely undressed?

Not at all. You should undress to your comfort level. Many clients choose to leave their underwear on, and that’s perfectly fine! Your therapist will always use professional draping techniques to cover your body, only exposing the area being worked on. Communication is key, so feel free to discuss your comfort level with your therapist beforehand.

2. What if I fall asleep or snore?

It happens all the time! Falling asleep is actually a great compliment to the therapist—it means you’re deeply relaxed. Snoring, sleep talking, drooling, or even farting are nothing to be embarrassed about. Your therapist has seen it all (believe us) and will continue the session without judgment.

3. Is it normal to feel sore after a massage?

Yes. Especially after a deep tissue massage, your muscles might feel sore for a day or two, similar to how you might feel after a workout. This is normal and usually means your body is responding to the work. Staying hydrated and doing light stretching can help.

4. Should I talk during the massage?

That’s entirely up to you. Some people find conversation relaxing, while others prefer silence. Your therapist will follow your lead. However, always feel free to speak up if something is uncomfortable, if you’re too cold or hot, or if you’d like the pressure adjusted.

5. What if I have body insecurities?

Many people feel self-conscious about their bodies, but rest assured—massage therapists are focused on your muscles and well-being, not your appearance. Therapists work with bodies of all shapes, sizes, and conditions every day. Their goal is to help you feel your best, not to judge you.

6. Can I get a massage if I’m ticklish?

Yes! Good massage therapists are trained to use firm, soothing pressure that actually reduces the ticklish response. If you’re worried about it, just mention it beforehand. Adjusting pressure, focusing on different techniques, or skipping your most ticklish areas can make the experience more enjoyable for you.

7. Do I need to tip my massage therapist?

In spas, massage studios, and private practices, tipping around 20% of the service price is customary. However, if you’re unsure, it’s always okay to ask the front desk or check the business’s website, as some places include gratuity in the price.

8. How often should I get a massage?

It depends on your goals. If you’re addressing specific issues like chronic pain, weekly sessions might be recommended initially. For general wellness or stress relief, a massage once or twice a month is often enough. Your therapist can help you create a schedule that fits your needs.
