Ready, Set, Relax: How to Get the Most Out of Your Massage Session

by | Feb 1, 2022 | Massage

After a hard day of working or playing in the mountains, nothing helps you hit the “reset” button like a relaxing massage session.

You’ve booked your massage. You check the clock. There are still a few hours before it’s time to head to the spa. What should you do to ensure you get the maximum benefits from your upcoming massage?

Keep reading to learn what you should do before, during, and after your next massage.

Before Your Massage

Ideally, you’ll have some time to rest from the day’s activities before you arrive at the spa. If you’re an early bird, you may also prefer to schedule your massage first thing in the morning.

Either way, try to prepare your body and mind for the relaxing experience ahead. Avoid eating a heavy meal right before your session, as this could make you feel uncomfortable, bloated, or gassy during the massage. It’s also best to limit caffeine and alcohol in the hours before your session.

If possible, take a hot shower or bath before your massage. Heat helps your muscles to relax and it also has a soothing effect on your mind. From a practical standpoint, it will also ensure that your skin is clean and odor-free.

Give yourself plenty of time to get to the spa, especially if it’s raining or snowing. Try to arrive 10-15 minutes early so you can relax in the waiting room and get into the massage mindset.

During Your Massage

Before the massage session begins, be sure to let your therapist know about any major injuries, surgeries, or health problems you have, as well as any allergies or sensitivities. This information allows your therapist to tailor the session to your unique needs.

Important note: Be sure to silence your cell phone before you get on the table!

Feel free to relax in silence, focus on your breathing, or even doze off during your massage. If you want to chat, that’s fine too — just remember that certain topics should remain “off the table.”

Of course, if you feel any pain or discomfort or you want your therapist to adjust their pressure, don’t hesitate to speak up. The same is true if you feel too hot or too cold or if you need to use the restroom.

After Your Massage

Take a few moments to lie quietly and be present after your massage session ends. If you feel inclined, spend a few minutes practicing gratitude or mindfully meditating. Most of all, focus on how relaxed and balanced you feel physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Be sure to drink some water immediately after your session. Hydration is vital to flush out all the toxins stirred up from the massage. It’s okay if you want to have an alcoholic beverage later on (after all, you are on vacation), but don’t overdo it — drink plenty of water too.

If possible, try not to do anything too strenuous for the rest of the day. Instead, give your mind and body the chance to enjoy that happy “massage buzz” long after you leave the spa.
